Biographical history

Robert Vance, 1849-1922, born in East Flamborough, ON, married Anne Elizabeth Clark, 1852-1913, in Dundas, ON. They had four children: Lillian, John, Mary and Robert James. Robert then moved to Alberta and married Helene Lagasse in 1890. They had two children: Robert James and Annie. In 1909 Robert filed on NE29-66-22 W4 in the Athabasca area. In 1918 Robert James married Vesta Lewis of Athabasca. They had nine children: Marjorie, Gordon, Roy, Kathryn, Lewis, Allan, Earl, Delores and Dean. In 1914 Annie Vance married Ernest Bulman-Fleming, the son of an English rector. They had five children: Vernon, Stanley, Ruth, Doris and Muriel. After Robert's death in 1922, Helene married Louis Menard of Athabasca.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of photographs of Helene Lagasse and two of her sisters, Annie Vance attending Athabasca Public School [1912], Annie and Ernest Bulman-Fleming, Annie and her children, and Louis Menard and Helene. The genealogy of the Lagasse, Vance and Bulman-Fleming families is incuded as well as Ernest Bulman-Flemings's service records as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WWI. The recording includes Gordon and Alan Vance reminiscing with Frank Falconer and Barbara Ashacker in 1983 about Athabasca, teachers, school friends, etc.
