Administrative history

Following seven years of petitioning from parents, and school board members, protesting the lack of bilingual schools available for Ukrainian children in Alberta, The Vegreville School for Foreigners opened in 1913. The school served to prepare Ukrainian teachers to attend Normal School in English. The Schools Act required all teachers, regardless of community requirements, to meet provincial standards. By 1913, training schools had already been established in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Students of the Vegreville School for Foreigners translated local, international, and national English newspapers into Ukrainian as an exercise for school. These newspapers were distributed to Ukrainians in the area. The school closed in 1918.
