Allan Harvey Joseph Wachowich was born in Opal, Alberta on March 8, 1935. He graduated from the University of Alberta with his B.A. in 1957, his LL.B. in 1958, and was admitted to the Bar on May 29, 1959. From 1959 until he was appointed to the Bench in 1974, Justice Wachowich practiced with the firm of Kosowan and Wachowich in Edmonton. He was admitted to the Bar of the Northwest Territories in 1963 and of the Yukon Territory in 1964. He was a member of the District Court of Northern Alberta 1974-1975, the District Court of Alberta 1975-1979, the Court of Queen's Bench 1979-93, and was appointed Associate Chief Justice of the Court of Queen's Bench in 1993. In 2001, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench. In 1979, he was appointed a Deputy Judge of the Supreme Court of the Yukon Territory. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Curriculum Committee of the Cambridge Conference of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Legal Studies. Wachowich has lectured at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Law in insurance law and professional responsibility and served as the Chair of the Alberta Automobile Insurance Board. Active in community affairs, Wachowich has also served as judicial advisor to the St. Thomas Moore Lawyer's Guild, was the arbitrator for the Canadian Football League, and was President of the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace. Wachowich is also a director of the United Way of Edmonton, President of Catholic Charities in Edmonton, and Chair of the Henry Singer Memorial Scholarship Fund.
