Biographical history
Walter Hill Moodie, 1871-1955, was born in Quebec City and moved to southern Alberta in 1891 where his family and a cousin, Leslie Hill, formed a partnership operating the Glenbow Ranch near Cochrane. In 1894, his parents, Walter and Janet, and sisters Margaret, Marion and Lucy moved into Calgary and young Walter left to work on the Dominion Land Survey in southern Alberta for the next two years. In 1896, he moved to Kaslo, British Columbia where he worked on mineral claim surveys and joined the Rocky Mountain Rangers in 1898. In 1899, he volunteered to serve a one year term with the 2nd (Special Service) Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment of Infantry fighting in the South African War. He remained in South Africa after his discharge in 1900, doing survey work for Central South African Railways before returning to British Columbia in 1908. He settled in Kelowna and worked as a manager of the Canyon Creek Irrigation Company. During the First World War, he served with the Canadian Engineers 1st Canadian Pioneers, later the 9th Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops, attaining the rank of Lieutenant-Coloner and earning a Distinguished Service Order (DSO). After the war, he operated a fruit farm near Kelowna until his retirement in 1944. He and his wife, Marcella Ellen Twiss, 1875-1949, had three children, Janet E. V. (Graham), 1904-1994, Edward Campbell, 1906-1970, and Marcella E. (Bell), 1909-1996. Custodial history
These papers were given to Catherine Smith of Calgary, granddaughter of Walter's sister Lucy. She subsequently donated them to Glenbow.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of his diaries, First World War letters, and photographs and albums related to family, South African War, First World War, surveying and his adventures.
