Biographical history

Walter James Grant Mackay, 1871-1966, was born in Inverness, Scotland and came to Calgary, Alberta with his family in 1886. He worked in a gun and rifle shop with J.S. Mackie and in 1889 started his own taxidermy business with George Frederick Dippie. He operated the company in Calgary and Banff until his retirement in 1945. He had extensive native beadwork and antique car collections and was well known as a fisherman and big game hunter. He was a member of the Kananaskis Coal Mining Syndicate. He and his wife, Millicent Christina Duncan, ?- 1937, had one son, John Alexander Grant "Jack", 1904-1957.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of personal and taxidermy business records; photographs of taxidermy specimens, early Calgary businesses, the Mackay family, and Kananaskis Coal Mining Syndicate activities; and an album featuring the Mackay family crest on the cover which contains views of the Sheep River area, Banff National Park, Kananaskis, Nose Hill, and the Pale Face Ranche (Paleface Ranch). Includes a transcript of an interview conducted by Don Tannas, 1961.
