Biographical history

Walter Paszkowski was born on April 23, 1934 in Sexsmith, Alberta. He received his education from Sexsmith High School and Fairview Agricultural College. At Fairview Agricultural College he took grain-marketing courses. After college, he became a farmer. Before being elected to the Provincial Legislature of Alberta in 1989 for the Grande Prairie-Smoky Riding, he served as a school trustee, councilor as well as Mayor for the Town of Vermilion. In 1992, Walter was appointed Minster of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development and Minister, responsible for the Land Compensation Board. He served in this position until 1996. From 1997 to 1999, he served as Minister of Transportation and Utilities, and from 1999 to 2001, he served as Minister of Municipal Affairs. In Sexsmith, he also maintained a seed farm and retail seed outlet. He has served as President of the Alberta Canola Growers, Chair of the Canola Council of Canada, and as a member of the Canadian Seed Growers Association.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of material used, maintained and created during Walter Paszkowski's tenure as Minister of the Department of Agriculture dating from 1992 to 1996. The fonds includes ministerial correspondence with provincial, federal, and municipal constituents, associations, societies, companies, and other governmental agencies; pamphlets and minutes of meetings, and news releases.
