Biographical history
On January 22nd 1979, a group of Wetaskiwin citizens met with Mayor Leavert Johnson to form a committee to plan the celebrations for Wetaskiwin's 75th anniversary as a municipality in 1981. Former mayor Jack Pike was named the first chairman. Throughout 1978 and the first half of 1979, the committee met regularly and planned a celebration weekend for July 17- 19, 1981. Efforts were made to contact and invite all former residents of Wetaskiwin to attend the celebration and local businesses were encouraged to participate. The celebrations took place as planned and culminated with a "1906" banquet headlined by a speech by Grant MacEwan. After the anniversary weekend was over, the committee disbanded and donated their records to the City of Wetaskiwin Archives.
