History

Bernard Wiese was born on May 27, 1930 near Westlock, Alberta to Oscar Wiese and Olive Wiese (nee Fulcher) and had six younger siblings, Eleanor, Kenneth, Charles, Ronald, Phyllis and Carol. His great-grandfather emigrated from Prussia to Minnesota in the United States of America circa (ca.) 1867 and the family later settled in Kansas. In 1913 Wiese's grandfather and father and their families immigrated to Westlock where they established a homestead at NW 4-27-61-W4. Bernard Wiese first attended school at Sunniebend School District No. 4021 ca. 1936 and then attended Westlock School District No. 3208 for high school. He graduated in 1948 and then attended Vermillion Agricultural College, graduating from there in 1950. He married Audrey Arndt in 1956 and together they had two children, Barbara and Keith. The Wiese's purchased a farm near Westlock at NE 9-61-1-W5 and later in 1966, with Bernard Wiese's brother Kenneth, they established a company together, Wiese Brothers Fertilizer. They operated the business until ca. 1997 and in 2002 Bernard Wiese retired and sold the majority of his farmland. Bernard Wiese was involved in various community organizations in and around Westlock including fundraising for the Westlock and Community District Hall and serving as president for the community project to write the local history, Memories of Pibroch, Sunniebend, Linaria & Shoal Creek. Wiese also helped found the Vintage Tractor Club of Westlock ca. 1995 and the Canadian Tractor Museum in 2002.
