Biographical history
Willard Kuhlman was a Private of the 361st Engineer Construction Branch based in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Willard and forty members of the 361st Branch left Missouri on May 23, 1951 and arrived in Whitehorse on October 11 to participate in a joint Canadian and U.S. military exercise known as 'Operation Eager Beaver'. The exercise involved building an airstrip, experimenting with equipment and clothing, building a landing strip on ice, and assembling pre-fab housing on the shore of Kluane Lake. Approximately 200 American and 300 Canadian military personnel participated in the exercise. Willard Kuhlman left the Yukon in May of 1952 to return to Missouri. He currently resides in Auburn, Nebraska.

Scope and content
The fonds consists of original photographs taken by Willard Kuhlman during the course of the joint U.S. and Canadian military exercise "Operation Eager Beaver" in the Kluane area between 1951 and 1952. The photographs document the construction of airstrips and buildings, Kluane Camp, Fort Beaver, and scenes of Whitehorse, Yukon. The fonds also includes postcards of Whitehorse with typewritten correspondence on the verso relating to military and camp life.
