British educator and soldier William Alexander Charles Guy was born in Newport, Isle of Wight, April 4, 1886; his ancestors were Wessex farmers, probably since the time of the Norman invasion. Grew up much as an only child despite having an older brother and sister, and continued on from school as a pupil teacher. Received his Certificate of Education from Hartley College (later the University of Southhampton) around 1906. Taught in Birmingham from 1906 to 1912 when he emigrated to Australia and taught in Perth Boys' School until the outbreak of World War I. Joined the ANZAC forces and landed at Gallipoli April 25, 1915, where he was wounded. Wounded again later in France, and commissioned around 1916. Married Augusta Adeleine Tanner, Headmistress of Acock's Green (Birmingham) Girls' School, November 4, 1915. Their only child, Kenneth Richard Guy, was born on September 30, 1916, in Nuneaton. Taught in Stratford-on-Avon from 1919 to 1923 and was Headmaster of the village school in Bishop's Itchington, Warwickshire, from 1923 to 1930, and Headmaster of Atherstone Secondary Modern School from 1930 to his retirement in 1949. Moved to Nuneaton where he continued to live after his wife died in 1967 until 1976 when he moved to Calgary, Alberta, to live with his son Richard and his daughter-in-law Louise. In 1978 moved into Confederation Park Lodge and died in Foothills Hospital March 29, 1980. In Stratford-on-Avon, he was Secretary of the British Legion. He was a Warwickshire Special Constable for many years and a longtime Freemason and member of the Abbey, Newdigate and Athelstone Lodges where he was well known for his instructional work. He was a keen gardener and a superb craftsperson at woodwork, metalwork, rug-making, basketry, pewter-work and bookbinding.
