Biographical history

William "Willie" Charles McKay, 1869-1941, was born and educated in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, where he worked as a stone mason and shepherd. In 1890, he was a piper for Queen Victoria. He served aspiper and batman in the Gordon Highlanders during that regiment's deployment from 1900-1902 in the Boer War. After returning to Scotland for a short period, William McKay was emigrated to the United States to work as a shepherd in Montana. He soon moved to Calgary, Alberta, where he worked as a stone mason and helped set up the first pipe band in that city. In 1904, he took out a homestead near Lousana, Alberta, at SE-16-36-22-W4. In 1908, he married Maggie Allan, 1881-1958. They had 5 children, Margaret, George, Archie, Rhona, and William. Inherited in 1958 by William McKay, then passed down to his son, Terry McKay, in 1971

Scope and content

Fonds consists of 2 small diaries (1900-1901), 1 notebook containing mensuration exercises, songs and financial accounts (1885-1893), a bill for bag pipe parts (1915), and a photograph of William McKay (ca. 1904)
