Biographical history

William (Billy) Henry McCardell, 1861-1944, was a prospector and timber contractor at Banff, Alberta, Canada. McCardell came west from Ontario in 1882 with a Canadian Pacific Railway construction crew. While in the area of present-day Banff, McCardell, his brother Tom, and Frank McCabe saw steam across the Bow Valley, rafted across the Bow River and followed a sulphur spring to the site of the Cave and Basin. In 1886, he was a claimant for ownership of the springs. He also claimed to have discovered the Upper Hot Springs in 1884. •McCardell was involved in numerous mining and lumber ventures in the Banff, Bankhead and Anthracite areas. Married to Elizabeth Ann Spencer, 1871-1930, William McCardell had six children: William, David, Kay (McDermott), Minnie (Davidson), Martha (Corbett) and Beth (Martin).

Fonds consists of manuscript "Reminiscences of a western pioneer: explorations through the Rocky Mountains, the story of a lost mine, the discovery of the Banff hot springs and Cave and Basin, mountain moods and interludes" by William McCardell, 470 p., copy of typescript. The manuscript describes McCardell's trip to western Canada, prospecting, hot springs discoveries, Tom McCardell, Frank McCabe, Jack Healy, Silver City, Stoney Indians, Lost Lemon Mine and other incidents in early Alberta history. Original typescript was prepared by Flt. Lte. W. McCardell, Edmonton (eldest son of Wm. McCardell. Fonds also includes portrait of McCardell, ca.1920, copy.
