Biographical history

William Roland Winter was born ca. 1860 and educated in England. He was a practicing lawyer when he came to Canada in 1892. From 1897 to 1900, Winter was a police magistrate in the North-West Territories, and was later Registrar of Land Titles. He was appointed to the District Court of Lethbridge in 1907 and to the District Court of Calgary in 1913. He retired in 1926, and died in 1929.

Custodial history

The records were maintained by William Winter until his death in 1926, at which point his records were added to those of his wife, Lydia Winter. The record group was then donated to the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1970.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of records related to Winter’s judicial career, newspaper clippings related to the Winters’ involvement in the arts, and newspaper clippings of arts articles written by Lydia Winter.
