Willmore Wilderness Park is located just north of Jasper National Park in the Rocky Mountains. It is south of Grande Cache and 300 km due west of Edmonton. It represents some of the last unexploited wilderness and is home to a variety of wild flowers and wildlife. It covers 4600 square kilometres. The Willmore became a protected area in 1959 and is managed by Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation, in the Hinton District. It was named in honor of Norman A. Willmore, former Alberta minister of Natural Resources in the Earnest Manning Government. Recreational activities include camping, hiking, horseback riding,cross-country skiing, canoeing and whitewater rafting on the Smokey River. The Willmore is the historical home of the Rocky Mountain Cree, trappers, outfitters and mountain men.
