James Edward Wize immigrated with his family to Edmonton, Alberta from Rossland, British Columbia circa (ca.) 1902. Wize owned the Corona Hotel in Edmonton and was an architect. He designed the Alberta Hotel and various other buildings in the city. Leonard E. Wize was born ca. 1902 and immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta from Rossland, British Columbia with his family ca. 1904. Wize played for the Edmonton Eskimos football team in the early 1920s and, at about the same time, took over the operation of the Corona Hotel from his father. The original building, known as Wize Block, was destroyed by fire in 1932, and a new building built at 106th Street and Jasper. During World War II Wize worked in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Edmonton hangers and served as personnel officer for the Air Observers' School. He retired in 1959 when he sold the Corona Hotel. Wize was founder, past-president, and lifetime member of the Alberta Fish and Game League, and was also a member of the Masons. He died on September 28, 1972, survived by his wife Wilda, his daughter, his stepdaughter, and his sister, Ethel.

Mrs. Wilda Wize, wife of Leonard E. Wize, deposited these records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1973.

Portée et contenu

Fonds consists of the records of the Wize family and includes correspondence, business cards, certificates from the Automobile Association and Motor Union, Calgary Electric Railway tickets, copied newspaper clippings, a promissory note, postcards, a telegram, and a letter of recommendation from Emily Murphy. Fonds also includes photographs and negatives depicting various buildings, street views, and parades in Alberta, including the Corona Hotel, Wize Block, Hudson's Bay Company trading posts, Queen Alexandra School, the parliament building, airplanes, and the 49th Battalion. A large number of photographs and negatives depict people, buildings, and views in other countries, such as Egypt, Russia, Finland, Germany, England, Holland, Burma, Italy, Japan, Macao, Manila, Norway, and Sweden. Fonds also includes a register from the Corona Hotel.
