Zachary Taylor Wood was born November 11, 1860 in Nova Scotia to John Taylor Wood and Lola Mackubin. He married Frances Augusta Daly in Napanee, Ontario, April 9, 1888 and they had two children (Stuart Zachary Taylor, 1889-1966, and Eleanor Mackubin). In 1882 Wood graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ont. In 1885 he was appointed an inspector in the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) and he was transferred to the Yukon in 1897. Wood spent most of the winter of 1897-1898 in Skagway, Alaska where the majority of gold seekers were starting their hike to the Klondike Gold Fields in the Yukon. Promoted to superintendent he was placed in command of Tagish Post in July 1898. Wood assumed command of the NWMP in the Yukon on April 18, 1900. He was raised to the rank of Assistant Commissioner in 1902 and remained in the territory until 1912. Zachary Taylor Wood died January 15, 1915 in North Carolina.
