Promoted to superintendent he was placed in command of Tagish Post in July 1898. Wood assumed command of the NWMP in the Yukon on April 18, 1900. He was raised to the rank of Assistant Commissioner in 1902 and remained in the territory until 1912. Zachary Taylor Wood died January 15, 1915 in North Carolina.
