Administrative history

William Woods, 1888-1962, was born in Guildford, Surrey, England. He came to Ontario in 1905 and to Calgary, Alberta in 1909. He worked in construction until 1915, then worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) Ogden shops. From 1929 to 1933 he worked for Bennett and White Construction. In 1933 he founded his own cement finishing business which in 1938 was named Woods Cement Works. In 1942 he established Woods Monumental. Both were located at 924-8th Avenue SW. Woods Cement built fire places, chimneys and garden ornaments, and Woods Monumental made headstones. William and his wife, Agnes, ?-1958, had three children, W.S. "Sim", Frank and Ruth (Runions). Both sons worked in the family businesses and when William retired in 1953, Frank took them over.
