History

The not-for-profit Words Work Literacy Society was created in 1988 to provide literacy programming to Athabasca area residents. From the 1988 By-Laws: The Words Work Adult Literacy Program, guided by the advisory board, seeks to provide in a supportive and positive climate, a service to the adults of the County of Athabasca who have difficulties with reading, writing, and numeracy. The program will help learners grow in confidence, social skills, and self-worth. The program, and the individuals involved also seek to raise community awareness on the issue of adult literacy. In recent years, computer literacy has been added to the program.

The Words Work Adult Literacy Program,guided by the advisory board, seeks to provide in a supportive and positive climate, a service to the adults of the County of Athabasca who have difficulties with reading, writing, and numeracy. The program will help learners grow in confidence, social skills, and self-worth. The program, and the individuals involved also seek to raise community awareness on the issue of adult literacy. 1) To provide opportunities for adults to learn or improve upon their reading, math, and writing skills needed to participate in their community. 2) To provide an education opportunity for adults who need basic literacy and numeracy skills. 3) To provide positive, supportive and confidential learning environments for the students. 4) To promote a sense of well being and self worth to those individuals served by the program. 5) To assess and respond to adult basic literacy and numeracy need on an ongoing basis. 6) To raise community awareness and understanding about the need for basic literacy and numeracy programs. 7) To promote a community participation, both financially and educationally, in providing adult basic literacy education.
