Biographical history

The administrative unit of OCO'88 which eventually became the Technology Group had the mandate to provide equipment and computer systems to support the communication and transmission of electronic data and video images as well as voice and sound at and between venues. This Group was also responsible for timing, scoreboards, public address systems, paging, radios and video services. Those sections of the OCO organizational structure which were developed to carry out these functions were, in the early stages of OCO's development, quite separate and diverse, with rapid and frequent changes to the names given to Groups, Divisions, Departments as well as to the titles of the officers in charge of these levels of organization. In early 1982, OCO consisted of six major "Groups" (see the Administrative History of the Executive Group), of which two Groups were responsible for carrying out the tasks associated with "Technology" as outlined above. The Technical Services Group included "Technology" in its operations, while the Administration Group was responsible for "Systems." By 1983 August, many organizational changes and appointments of officers had taken place. Facilities and Technical Services, headed by Divisional Vice President, Ron Collie, was a "Division" of the Olympic Services Group, under Group Vice President, John Pickett. Custodial history

The records of OCO'88 were formally acquired by the City of Calgary Archives through an agreement signed 1990 January 22 between The City of Calgary, the Calgary Olympic Development Association and the XV Olympic Winter Games Organizing Committee. Most of these records were transferred directly to the City of Calgary Archives upon the conclusion of the activities of the organizing committee in 1988 prior to the signing of the formal agreement. The OCO'88 photograph collection was held at the Olympic Hall of Fame but transferred to the City Archives in the fall of 1989; some individual images had remained in the Public Information Department of The City where they had been used in the publication of THE OFFICIAL REPORT, but were later transferred to the Archives. A number of boxes of OCO'88 records intended for the City of Calgary Archives were mistakenly sent to Kestrel Data Inc., the company responsible for the storage of the financial records of OCO'88. This material was transferred to the Archives in 1991 August, and all accrued material has been added to the appropriate series. In 1990 October, twenty-one volumes of legal agreements were transferred to the Archives from the law firm of Bennett, Jones, Verchere, the law firm which represented OCO'88, and two more volumes of these agreements are expected. One copy of the set of original broadcast videos was transferred to the Archives in 1990 from Videodex, the firm which copied these videos from the original broadcast tapes. A second set of videos, originally stored at Videodex, has been transferred to The City of Calgary's off-site storage facility.

Scope and content

The City of Calgary Archives received approximately 11 meters of records from the Technology Group of OCO'88. These were from the two Divisions, namely the Systems Division and the Technical Services and Computing Systems Division. These records are predominately textual, but also consist of plans, blueprints, photo prints, a computer diskette and a cultural historic items (ID badge). Photo prints have been placed into appropriate archival enclosures and left in the file folders. Oversize material has been removed from original folders and placed into either oversize Hollinger boxes or map folders in map cabinets. The records have been arranged into 11 series.
