Biographical history

In 1910, Ching Mou Yee emigrated from Taishan, China to Millet, Alberta. Ching owned and operated two restaurants in Millet, which were destroyed by fire. Ching later opened “Ching Yee’s Café” (built in 1915, renamed Wellington Café in 1927 by Sim and Hee Yee). In 1920, Ching Yee brought over six family members from China on the S.S. “Mont Eagle”. His wife was Mee Lang. His sons were Sim Yee and Hee Yee. Hee Yee’s son, Hong Yee (1911-1926) married Dorothy Wagner, one of Millet’s Pioneer Women. In 1945, Hee Yee and his son Hong demolished the Wellington Café and built the Rainbow Grill, which was bought by Hong’s nephew, Kai-Fun and his wife Vivien Yee in 1977, and the name was changed to the Skylark Café. The Skylark Café burned down in 1996.
