Biographical history

The idea of forming a Yukon New Democratic Party was initiated in 1967 but the Party was not formally established until 1973. The Party formed the Territorial Government from 1985 to 1992 under Government Leader Tony Penikett and again from 1996-2000 under Government Leader Piers McDonald.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds consists of executive records, sound recordings, photographs and a poster of the Yukon New Democratic Party, 1969-1992. The first accession, from 1969-1974, contains five files of correspondence and election expenses. The sound recordings are of the party's Founding Convention in 1973 (82/483). The second accession, from 1973-1985, includes caucus notes, correspondence, election notes (federal and territorial), copies of speeches, federal NDP executive records, minutes of Yukon NDP executive meetings, delegates' election campaign funds, policies, reports, records of ridings, and lists of contributors, 1973 to 1985. The photographs are of elected members and campaign workers, NDP campaigns and events (89/18R). There is also one election poster (93/24). Three accessions are still in process. One accession contains Yukon NDP records covering the period (1983-1985) when Max Fraser was secretary and president of the Party and when Tony Penikett was secretary and then Leader of the Party (90/35). The second accession contains the financial records for the years 1985-1992 and Executive Minutes for the years 1983-1991. There is also territorial election sign information for 1989 (95/48). The third accession consists of NDP caucus records including case work files, and one box of maps and drawings. The maps and drawings relate to Vuntut Gwich'in First Nation land claim agreement, various architectural structures, and elections (96/80).
